This is an extremely useful measuring device for the measuring of reeds as you make or adjust them. They may be used also for measuring the gouge (thickness) of cane before making it into a reed.

Why Use a Dial Indicator?

Fundamental to a balanced reed is the idea of bilateral symmetry, that is, that the reed is the same thickness or thinness blade to blade or from one quadrant to the other.

Though visually identical, it may be that the reed maker/adjuster takes more cane out of one side of the reed than the other. This would be due to the varying pressure or weight of his or her stroke from one side of the reed to the other and is normal. Even .002mm (which is less than the thickness of a hair) will make a difference!

Being able to measure what you do, very simply lets you:

  • Know your tendency with your knife stroke
  • Correct for any inconsistency in the gouge of the cane or from your knife stroke
  • Virtually guarantee a more perfect reed infrastructure.
